The results of the June 14 Statewide Primaries have been certified with the runoff set for Tuesday (June 28).

There will be a runoff for the Marlboro County Council District 4 seat.

This was determined on June 16 after the certification of the results by the Marlboro County Elections and Voter Registration office.

A runoff happens when no candidate wins the majority of the vote, which is determined by dividing the total number of votes by two and adding one. The candidates with the highest number of votes go to a runoff.

Pearly Lawson received 155 votes (42.58%) while Thomas Pie Johnson received 109 votes (29.95%) and Jaheem McLaurin received 100 votes (27.47).

Lawson and Johnson will be in the runoff.

Early voting was from Wednesday, June 22 to  Friday, June 24. A total of 248 people voted.

Statwide Primary Runoff Election Day is Tuesday (June 28) with all precincts opened from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. due to statewide runoffs for the U.S. Senate – Democratic and State Superintendent of Education – Republican.

For the U.S. Senate, Catherine Fleming Bruce, Angela Geter, and Krystle Matthews were running as Democrats for a U.S. Senate seat. Bruce had 59,777 (34.69%) while Matthews had 57,278 (33.24%) and Geter had 55,281 (32.08%).

Bruce and Matthews will face each other on June 28. The winner will run against Incumbent Republican Senator Tim Scott who ran unopposed.

Six candidates competed for the Republican nomination to become the next Superintendent of Education. Votes were Travis Bedson, 47,241 (13.94%); Bryan Chapman, 42,498 (12.54%), Kizzi Gibson, 37,743 (11.14%); Lynda Leventis-Wells, 28,755 (8.48%); Kathy Maness, 103,608 (30.57%); and Ellen Weaver, 79,077 (23.33%).

Maness and Weaver are in the runoff on June 28. The winner will face Democrat Lisa Ellis in November.

Town of Tatum

The results of the Town of Tatum General Election are as follows:

For town council, Arthur Hamer received 13 votes while Robert Hubbard received 10.

For unexpired town council term, Betty Blakley received 13 votes.
