BENNETTSVILLE—Lora Biron, owner of Brew & Bake, knows a need when she sees one.

“I know a lot of people that work at the Humane Society and I also volunteered for a couple of events. And I thought they don’t have anything going on to raise money for their immediate needs right now, so I thought why not just have one day where I can dedicate as much as I can to the Humane Society,” she said.

So Biron created the inaugural Bark-A-Thon fundraiser. This Saturday, 10 % of all sales at the bakery will be donated to the Humane Society of Marlboro County. The event will also have adoptable dogs on site for anyone seeking a pet and free pup cups while supplies last because your furry friends are welcome to attend too.

The Humane Society will have applications for adoption on hand and anyone interested in taking a dog home will have the opportunity to fill out the paperwork and pay the fee to take the dog home.

“They are at three times capacity, so they’re not really turning people away, so they just need to fill out an application and pay the adoption fee,” she said. Before the dog moves in with its new family, it will have to be spade or nurtured. “Once a family selects a dog, the application and the fee needs to be turned in and then they will arrange to have that dog ready to go after the surgery is scheduled.”

There will be a question and answer session with animal control and food donations will be accepted. Make sure the brands are Purina or Pedigree only, as those are the brands the shelter dogs are being fed.

“They do accept any kind of food donation, the thing is the dogs are used to a specific food and if their food gets switched up too often, they end up with a lot of dogs vomiting. So, they’re trying to keep them on the same brand of food.”

The Q&A will the animal control officer will help the community understand what to do about strays in their neighborhoods and rules concerning owning a pet.

Biron said she wanted to make the event interactive and that’s one of the reasons why the adoptable dogs will be on site.

“They have three times the capacity with the animals right now, so we really need to push adoption as well as any type of food or monetary donations as well. It was supposed to be just a little thing, but it has blown up a lot bigger than I thought. But that’s okay, go big or go home, right?”

Biron said she’s also reaching out to Marlboro Chamber of Commerce members to donate 10 % of their sales Saturday to the Humane Society. “I’m hoping that if I make this a yearly thing this can be one event that the Humane Society can count on every year to get some funds from.”

Biron said she doesn’t have a set goal for the fundraiser, but in her heart, she hopes to raise a few thousand dollars for the shelter. “I told everybody that the monetary donations done online go straight to the Humane Society. We’re going to keep track and notify everybody once the event ends and it will be a benchmark for next year.”

If you purchase the Brew & Bake dog treats on Saturday, 100% of those sales will go to the Humane Society. Biron said they have baked up about $150 worth of those treats.

The event starts at 8 a.m. and runs until 2 p.m. at Brew & Bake located at 404 Cheraw St., Bennettsville.
