MARLBORO COUNTY — Thursday, the Bennettsville Police Department and Fire Department teamed up for the important cause of cancer awareness by rolling up their sleeves and participating in some good old fashioned car washing, the proceeds going towards the American Cancer Society. The event was held at the Bennettsville Public Safety Complex from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in honor of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“If we can spend two to three hours watching football on an afternoon, we can certainly come out here and wash cars for a great cause and be present in our community. We are delighted to do our part to raise money and awareness to further cancer research,” says Police Chief Sammy Crosland. He added, “The fire department contacted us, it was Chief [Chris] Burk’s idea, and it was actually a really great idea to give back to cancer fighters and survivors in our community and help slow cancer rates.”

For the man with the great idea, Fire Chief Burks says it came to him from a similar event the police department used to hold.

“I thought this was a good idea for us to work together and form an inner agency bond. I know we all have a loved one or know someone who is affected by cancer, so we feel like this is an important cause,” explained Chief Burks.
