MARLBORO COUNTY — Deputies with the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of an individual acting erratically while possibly armed on Academy Road in Bennettsville on October 6.

After arriving on scene, deputies located the subject they identified as Jerry Booth Jr., who showed obvious signs of paranoia and other disoriented behavior, according to law enforcement reports. Blood was also observed by deputies on Booth’s person and the firearm he was indeed armed with, prompting an immediate medical evaluation to be conducted.

Meanwhile, deputies continued their thorough investigation into the incident and subsequently uncovered Booth’s vehicle parked in the area, leading them to Marlboro Academy, where they discovered physical evidence that included bullet casings and damage to school windows.

Law enforcement confirms windows were damaged when Booth shot a hail of gunfire shot into the building. Surveillance provided by the school revealed the suspect discharged his firearm towards the school with intent.

Total damage committed by Booth to both the school and a nearby vehicle racked up to an estimated total of $12,000.

The MCSO assured in a released statement, “No injuries to students, staff, or community members were reported. The prompt coordination between patrol units, investigators, and responding EMS personnel ensured the situation was contained safely.”

Following his medical evaluation, Jerry Booth Jr. was taken into custody and charged with Unlawful carry of a firearm, Discharging a firearm into a building, and Malicious injury to property ($10,000 or more).

Additionally, Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office wishes to extend its appreciation to Marlboro Academy staff, Marlboro EMS, and all assisting deputies for their professionalism and swift response resolving the dangerous incident.

Booth’s case remains under review by the Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division.
