The annual Dennis Miller Jamboree was held on Aug. 11 with scrimmages involves Red Springs, Hemingway, Atlantis Collegiate, Marion, and Marlboro County High School. Prior to the start of the Jamboree, the late Dennis Miller was recognized for contributions to Marlboro County recreation.

The annual Dennis Miller Jamboree gave Marlboro County High School a chance to preview their upcoming season to fans.

Head Coach Quin McCollum said it went better than we expected.

“It gave us a baseline of what we wanted to do and some things we needed to work on,” he said. “It is what you want to happen in a Jamboree.”

The Bulldogs played in two scrimmages against Atlantic Collegiate and Marion High.

“Marion was a more experienced opponent because this was the first time for Atlantic Collegiate,” McCollum said.

The Bulldogs won 6-0 against Atlantic Collegiate.

“We did everything we wanted to do to get players some live action,” he said. “It was getting them oriented to game time experience and preparing for the game.”

It wasn’t just the varsity players on the field but most of the JV players.

In the scrimmage against Marion, the Bulldogs lost 6-0.

“They won 6-0 off of a big fast play, but it was a good experience for our student-athletes,” he said.

Before the Jamboree, McCollum said they recognized the Miller family.

The Jamboree is done in memory of Dennis Miller, who was instrumental in helping recreational sports in Marlboro County.

“And he was instrumental to the beginning of Bulldog athletics,” McCollum said.

With the season’s first game on Aug. 25, McCollum is still recruiting players for varsity and JV.

This is week zero for the team, and McCollum is optimistic heading into week one.

“We’re trying to get to where we need to be,” he said. “We just need to ensure we have good practices and that conditioning is on point.”

Due to the heat advisories, the team has not been on the field for some days.

The Bulldogs will play their first game of the season at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 25 at Cheraw High.
