Marlboro County High School senior MacKenzie Kubas signed a letter of intent on Nov. 17 in the MCHS media center, surrounded by her family, teammates, friends, and coaches, to play softball at Florence-Darlington Technical College.

Principal Michael Dease said he has seen Kubas on the volleyball court but hadn’t seen her play softball.

“I’m hearing great things about her and as you can see, it shows today as we sign she’s signing today to play softball,” Dease said.

Dease like McCollum played at MCHS and were both college athletes.

“When you get to that next level, it’s a business,” Dease said. “Mackenzie, get ready to take care of business.”

Athletic Director and Head Coach Quin McCollum told Kubas that it was a great accomplishment.

“My personal motto was victory loves preparation, and she has done all she can do in preparing for this moment,” he said. “I know she’ll be successful. I had the opportunity to watch as I became an AD last year watch the softball team and traveled with them. I was amazed. I truly was amazed at the playoff run you guys had and you’re a big part of that.”

Softball Coach Kevin Inglis said Kubas is a five-year starter at Marlboro County High School.

She is a two-time All-region player and was the Region 6AAA Player of the year last year. Last year, Kubas made All-state and Softball Factory preseason All-American. She holds the school record for most strikeouts with 617 strikeouts in her career. She is 19-1 in region play.

“In the last two years, I’ve had the pleasure to watch MacKenzie from coach pitch all the way to high school,” Inglis said.

Kubas said he umpired her coach pitch games and is amazed that the work that she has put in to be the player she is now.

“This is just a stepping stone,” Inglis said. “Next year, I look forward to watching you play next year on the college level. She is a great teammate, a great student, and an even better person.”

Kubas said she choose Florence-Darlington Technical College because it was small and like home.

“They were a lot like our high school team and I really liked our high school team and the way we run things. They ran it a lot like our high school team.”

When asked what she would say to her teammates to inspire them in a game of softball.

“I would tell them to just keep working hard, always be a good teammate, keep God first and maybe we can get a state championship,” Kubas said.

Her goal for the season is to win a state championship.

And knowing that team is as young, Kubas was asked what kind of leader did she see herself being for the team.

“I try to keep everybody loud and all the energy up,” she said. “If you got good energy, you got a good game.”
