BENNETTSVILLE — Bennettsville just got a whole lot tougher — in the best way possible. A new force in martial arts has arrived: Pee Dee Powerhouse BJJ, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy, founded and instructed by Jimmy Altman, a verified black belt with over 17 years of training and a deep commitment to self-defense, youth mentorship, and community empowerment.

Located at 212 E Main Street, the dojo officially opened its doors with a bold promise to offer world-class grappling instruction in a welcoming, contract-free environment. Whether you’re a curious beginner or a seasoned athlete, Pee Dee Powerhouse BJJ is built to help you grow stronger — physically and mentally.

What Makes It a Powerhouse?

• Large mat space for safe, dynamic training

• Gi and NoGi Jiu-Jitsu options for all skill levels

• Wrestling instruction to round out grappling fundamentals

• Kid and adult programs with flexible scheduling

• No contracts—just commitment and consistency

Classes run Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings, with kids (ages 6+) training from 5:45–6:45 p.m. and adults from 6:50–8 p.m. Saturday sessions kick off at 10 a.m., and additional offerings like the KCC schedule are posted on their Facebook page.

Jimmy Altman isn’t just a black belt — he’s a mentor, veteran competitor and lifelong student of the art. His training journey began in Hawaii and took him through elite academies in Texas before returning home to Bennettsville. With verified credentials and a reputation for technical precision and humility, Altman brings a rare blend of experience and heart to the mat.

“Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches you how to stay calm under pressure, how to think strategically, and how to respect others,” Altman says. “It’s not just about fighting — it’s about becoming the best version of yourself.”

Pee Dee Powerhouse BJJ isn’t just a gym — it’s a movement. It’s a place where kids build confidence, adults relieve stress, and families find strength together. With no contracts and a focus on accessibility, Altman is making martial arts available to everyone in Marlboro County.
