The Bennettsville Police Department filed the following reports:
May 17
–Police were patrolling the area of Broad Street and Highway 15-401 Bypass West at 6:07 p.m. when a red Honda Accord driven by Lexus Briana Strickland, 25, of McColl drove past and was not wearing a seatbelt. Strickland said her driver’s license was suspended for unpaid tickets and she did not have any insurance during the traffic stop. Strickland was cited for driving under suspension first offense, operating uninsured, tag registered to another vehicle, and a warning was issued for the seatbelt violation.
–A vehicle driven by Willie Dearon Bright, 38, of Bennettsville was clocked doing 53 mph in a 35-mph zone at 9:51 p.m. Police attempted a traffic stop with Bright stopping in the middle of the roundabout. Police asked him to pull out of the roundabout and park on the side of the road. Bright kept going and was stopped at the Pic-N-Pay store parking lot. After a field sobriety test and a breath sample of 0.09, which is above the legal limit, Bright was arrested and charged with driving with an unlawful alcohol concentration. He received a written warning for speeding.
May 18
–Police met with a complainant at the police department about a larceny of plants on the front porch of the Pee Dee Coalition. The plants were on the porch at 5:30 p.m. on May 17. At 9:30 a.m. the next day, the complainant noticed four plants ($50) were missing. It was noted that this was the second time the flowers had been stolen. The incident was forwarded to the Detective Division for further investigation.
–Police were dispatched to the National Guard Armory at 1:06 p.m. about discovering a vandalized window pane ($250).
–Police were parked at the Courthouse at 11:55 p.m. when multiple gun shots were heard. Central Dispatch had calls coming from Powers Street and a home on Jennings Street. A complainant on Jennings said his house had been shot. The bullet went through a bedroom window, through the wall and through the bathroom mirror. Nearby, the front of another home had been shot with three bullet holes and two bullet holes in a vehicle. A house on Powers Street was struck multiple times. Central Dispatch advised that a victim had arrived at the Scotland Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound.
May 19
–Police arrested Brandee C. Sweatt, 42, of Bennettsville for misuse of 911.
– Police were sitting at Sprint Convenience Store at 8:03 p.m. when a call came in about a vehicle believed to be involved in a shooting incident on May 18. Police conducted a traffic stop. The driver, Kyliek Kamil Morrison, 21, of Bennettsville ran from the vehicle, through the Dollar Tree parking lot, and into a field on the other side of the store. Morrison was eventually caught and said he ran due to not having a valid driver’s license. He also had a black Glock 19 with an extended magazine and a Troy Carbine rifle. Morrison was arrested for unlawful carry of a firearm and citations for driving under suspension and failure to stop on command. The case was forwarded to Investigations.
May 20
–Police conducted a traffic stop at 4:58 p.m. on Hamlet Highway near Green Street. The vehicle was going 54 mph in a 35-mph zone. The driver Shannon L. Williams, 45, of Bennettsville was arrested for driving under suspension third offense and a citation for speeding 54/35 mph zone.
–Police responded to the Tobacco and Vape Shop at 1:03 p.m. The complainant said a juvenile walked behind the counter, took a vape pen and put it in his pocket as she was helping a customer. The juvenile denied taking anything. He was searched and a box with the Hyde Rechargeable Vape ($15) was found on him. The juvenile was placed on a no trespass. A copy of the report was forwarded to the Department of Juvenile Justice.
–Police responded to an active fight in progress on Center Street at 11:15 p.m. Dispatch advised the individuals were armed with knives. Once on scene, a victim was bleeding from her hands, and it was noted she had a petechial hemorrhage in her eyes, which is consistent with being strangled. EMS took the victim to an area hospital. Police also observed a bloody knife and scissors lying on the ground near the door. Cecilia Malachi, 45, of Bennettsville, was arrested for assault and battery of high and aggravated nature. Malachi was also taken to an area hospital.
May 21
–Police were assisting with a call for service while at Carl’s Food Center at 10:36 a.m. when Nathaniel Williams, 51, of Bennettsville was observed walking out the store and heading to his vehicle. When Williams noticed law enforcement, he walked past the vehicle and towards Atkins Street. The officer positioned his vehicle behind another vehicle to see what Williams would do. Williams had another male drive his vehicle out of the grocery store parking lot. The male got out and Williams got in. He proceeded down Atkins Street toward Parsonage Street. The officer followed Williams down Atkins Street, who noticed and pulled into a residence located in the county. The officer parked on Parsonage Street and waited for Williams to cross into the city limits. A traffic stop was conducted. Williams was arrested for driving under suspension third offense.
May 22
–Police were dispatched to Glen Street at 12:05 a.m. about a single-vehicle car accident. A red Lincoln was in the ditch and the front wheel stuck due to it being muddy. No one was inside, but an open container of an alcoholic beverage was in the cup holder. While waiting for a tow truck, Jeanine Tiera Polston, 24, of Bennettsville came toward police and said the car belonged to her. She admitted she had been drinking. When asked if she had been drinking and driving, she said no. Due to her having mud all over her clothes and an open container of alcoholic beverage in her vehicle, police knew she was driving the vehicle. She was given a ticket for leaving the scene of an accident.
