A brunch on Saturday will benefit a nonprofit dedicated to the needs of disabled adults/students.
Zions Care Nonprofit will have a Men’s Brunch at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Berea Convention Center.
The cost is $20 for adults and $15 for youth 17 and under. A table is $150.
The speaker for the event will be Sen. Gerald Malloy.
Franklin Washington, executive director of Zions Care, said the organization has raised more than $15,000.
Those funds were used to provide Christmas gifts for teens in foster care, beginning phase one of restoring a home for special needs adults, and Christmas gifts for students in school with disabilities.
“We wanted to assist those with special needs,” he said.
“Me and my family have done foster care for children who have needs and we wanted to extend that to assist more children.”
The nonprofit is in its fourth year.
We wanted to help others with clothing, different needs like gift cards and whatever need they may have.
Washington, who is a native of Charleston, has been the pastor of New Saint Matthew Missionary Baptist Church for six years.
Zions Care is partnering with AMIkids School to give students another chance in society.
During the event, awards will be given to successful people in the community and a presentation will be made to AMIkids.
CareSouth will provide physicals and COVID vaccinations. Other vendors will be in attendance.
“We are gladly accepting any donations,” Washington said. “We are looking for those who want to be in attendance to come and celebrate this great community we have here.”
Washington is inviting youth to attend the event.
“We wanted to invite children in our community and show them successful individuals,” he said. “We are honoring those in the community and to show youth that they can do what they want in spite of the need they have.”
He noted that not all children will go to college and not all will go into the military. There are other avenues that children could take such as truck driving and other things to be successful in life.
