Ever since Tysonia Lowe was a student-athlete at Marlboro County High School, she had a goal – to earn 1,000 points in her career.

It was a milestone reached during a tournament during the Thanksgiving holidays.

“It felt great to reach it,” said Lowe, who plays varsity basketball for Lady Bulldogs. “It has been one of my goals since I came to high school.”

Lowe, a senior, was recognized for her milestone after the MCHS game at home against Cheraw High School on Dec. 9.

“I haven’t heard of another female from Marlboro County to reach 1,000 points,” she said. “I wanted to reach it last year, but I didn’t, but I knew I was going to reach it this year.”

And on the same day she reached 1,000 points, she received an offer to play basketball for Benedict College.

Lowe knows she wants to play basketball in college and major in sports management but is still determining where she wants to play.

Varsity Girls Head Coach Leah Zimmerman said it is a big accomplishment for a high school player.

Zimmerman added she had not looked at previous records, but she may be the first young lady to achieve this honor.

“I am excited for her,” Zimmerman said. “I think it is a great accomplishment. It speaks a lot about her abilities and her skills.”

Since Lowe made it to 1,000 points during Thanksgiving, Zimmerman thought she was probably at almost 1,100 points in her high school career.

Lowe averages 20 points a game.

“She is a great student-athlete all the way around,” Zimmerman said. “She still has some maturing to do. She is a senior preparing to start a new journey going to college. I think she is more than capable of playing on the college level and learning the skills she needs to develop to be a standout player on the college level.”

So far, Lowe said the season is going well.

“We have lost a couple of games, but we are getting back to shape.”

Now that she has reached 1,000 points, Lowe plans to keep going.

She thanked her family and coaching staff at MCHS for supporting her and her uncle Speedy for introducing her to basketball.

Her parents are Sandra Lowe and Ebay Moore of Bennettsville.
