The Marlboro County School District will have a town hall meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 8 about the 2023-2024 modified school calendar.
It will be in the media center at Marlboro County High School.
Light refreshments will be served.
Dr. Jason Bryant, associate superintendent for human resources, curriculum, instruction, and assessment said the meeting was a chance to answer parents’ questions about the modified calendar and to discuss how extracurriculars and after-school programs would be affected.
“The information presented will help them prepare for next year for childcare and different things,” he said.
The modified calendar is not year-round. It has some of the same breaks in the traditional school calendar with the exception of having Christmas, spring, and summer breaks.
Bryant said the summer break will a little bit shorter because school will start on July 31. Other changes include a weeklong break in October and the first semester will end before the Christmas break.
“It gives us some breaks throughout the year for both students and staff,” he said.
The calendar will still be 180 school days but more spaced out.
Bryant said some of the districts that have already done it across the state said students and staff are a lot more refreshed to avoid teacher burnout.
“And from an academic standpoint, it will provide some interventions to help our students retain information and have better achievement,” he said.
