The Bennettsville Police Department filed the following reports:
June 23
–Police spoke to a complainant at 6:49 p.m. about an earlier incident at Walmart. The complainant purchased a vehicle in Charlotte and had his disabled veteran’s tag on it. He returned to Bennettsville and stopped at Walmart for almost 30 minutes. When he arrived home, the tag was missing. The complainant noted the tag was secured on his vehicle when he left Charlotte.
–Police were dispatched to the EZ Mart Gas Station at 11:08 p.m. about a stolen bank card. The complainant said he let a male subject take his bank card and his pin number and use it on June 17 because the complainant owed him $250. The male subject was supposed to give it back but instead changed the pin number and now refuses to return it. The case was forwarded to Investigations.
June 24
–Police were notified at 10:53 a.m. about a female being attacked and bitten by three dogs in the areas of Jennings and McCall Streets. Once on scene, police saw the victim had several noticeable lacerations on her right arm, right leg, and lower back. Witnesses all said the dogs came from a residence on Jennings Street. The victim was riding her bike down McCall when three Old English Bulldogs chased, caught, and attacked the victim until bystanders could get the dogs off her. The dogs were “wrangled” by a family member of the owner and secured back inside a fence at the Jennings Street residence. The owner, April Campbell, 40, of Bennettsville, was issued a citation for dogs running at large. The Humane Society of Marlboro County took custody of all three dogs per quarantine protocols about an animal bite. The victim was transported to an area hospital.
–Police were dispatched to Matheson Street at 3:34 p.m. about a tree falling on a vehicle. The complainant noted the Marlboro County School District owned the tree. The tree was located on the south end of the CareSouth Carolina Public Employee Health Services building at the edge of the parking lot near the Matheson Street roadway. Two vehicles were damaged. A school district representative contacted York’s Tree Service to remove the broken tree limb from the vehicles.
–Police responded to Walmart at 3:58 p.m. about shoplifting. The complainant said the subject was still inside the store. He had shoplifted a watch ($9) and used an Exacto knife to switch bar codes from other items. The suspect, Keith Lamark Taylor, 49, of Florence, was found with the Exacto knife and wearing the watch on his wrist. As Taylor walked toward the front office, he fled from the scene on foot. Police commanded him to stop but he kept running. He was apprehended by police and arrested for shoplifting and failure to stop on command.
–Police were dispatched to the parking lot of SoPakCo at 8:39 p.m. about a stolen gun. While on break at 8:36 p.m., the complainant noticed some things were out of place and his Mossberg MC2C 9MM gun had been stolen. He had arrived for work at 3:3o p.m. so he wasn’t exactly sure when it was taken. His vehicle was not locked due to being in a car accident.
June 25
–Central Dispatch notified police at 1:56 a.m. about a complainant’s son stealing her vehicle and wrecking it. The vehicle was stolen from Myrtle Street but wrecked at the Williams Motel. The complainant said her son took the vehicle while she was asleep. He came back to the residence to tell her that he had wrecked it. At the time, she wanted to press charges. Police returned to the residence. The son begged her not to have him arrested because he was just released from prison. The complainant changed her mind and decided not to press charges. It was explained to her that if no charges were pressed, all of the expenses may fall on her. She decided to press charges but then changed her mind multiple times. In the end, the son was not arrested.
–At 8:14 p.m., police were working at the City of Bennettsville Independence Day Fireworks Celebration. A complainant said her juvenile daughter had been struck in the leg while waiting in line at a food truck by an individual operating a golf cart. EMS treated the juvenile. The juvenile’s mother wanted the incident reported. Based on the description of the golf cart and operator, police identified the person as a City of Bennettsville employee. The incident was forwarded through the proper channels.
–At 10:14 p.m., police were conducting traffic control at the intersection of Jefferson Street and Country Club Drive due to the fireworks show at Lake Paul Wallace. A white pickup truck, driven by Anthony Lee Oxendine, 33, of McColl, drove past officers at the barriers blocking incoming traffic and kept driving after officers yelled for him to stop. After he stopped, police observed him looking confused and could smell a strong odor of alcohol. Oxendine admitted to drinking. He failed the field sobriety test. Oxendine was arrested for driving under the influence. While at the detention center, he repeatedly acted as if he was going to blow for the breath sample but would stop. It was listed as a refusal.
–Police were dispatched to the Center Street Apartments at 11:45 p.m. about a female trying to fight everyone in the parking lot. The complainant said the female, Caldecia Monique Zimmerman, 18, of Bennettsville had been drinking and was laying on the floor. She was “showing out” and trying to fight everyone because she was intoxicated. The complainant showed where Zimmerman had been fighting with her. As the complainant was leaving, Zimmerman stood up, ran out the front door, and struck the complainant in the head with her fist. Zimmerman was arrested for disorderly conduct.
June 26
–Police were dispatched to Bennettsville Intermediate School at 2:49 p.m. about the discharge of a firearm into a dwelling. Marlboro County School District Maintenance found a window shattered. It had been intact on June 23 when staff left the school. The window located to the left of the cafeteria entrance had a bullet fragment among the shattered glass. Police collected several bullet shell casings. The school surveillance system captured the incident taking place. The incident was forwarded to the Detective Division for further investigation.
June 27
–Police were dispatched to Marshall Street about an assault at 11:39 p.m. Central Dispatch said the complainant had been assaulted by her son and was on the scene “showing out.” As police were trying to speak to the complainant, Larry Derrick McCrae started yelling from the kitchen. After the complainant said he had assaulted her, he ran outside toward a barn in the back yard and grabbed a metal crutch. McCrae yelled obscenities at officers and was given loud verbal commands to put his hands behind his back. He refused several times. He was then tased. As an officer attempted to grab his arm, McCrae bit him on the hand. The complainant said she did not wish to pursue charges for the assault. McCrae was arrested for disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and assault on a police officer. In a supplemental report, McCrae stated he was fighting with another female at the residence and the complainant got in the way.
June 30
–Police spoke with a complainant at the Bennettsville Police Department at 6:43 a.m. about an assault on Railroad Street earlier. Upon arrival, police observed the complainant’s face and clothing contained a substantial amount of dried blood on it. The complainant took police to the residence and said it was where she normally gave someone a ride to work. At 5:45 a.m., when she pulled into the person’s driveway, she noticed a red/burgundy Nissan Altima sitting at the stop sign. As the rider was approaching her vehicle, the car pulled up with a black female subject. The subject opened the front door to the complainant’s vehicle and struck her several times in the face with a closed fist. Then the subject left the scene. The subject, the complainant and the person given the ride all work at the same location. The complainant said the incident resulted from another incident that had taken place at their place of employment. An arrest warrant was obtained for the subject regarding assault and battery third degree.
–Police were dispatched to Bojangles at 3:15 p.m. about a disturbance. The complainant said a white male entered the restaurant and began arguing with the cashiers. An assistant manager heard the disturbance and went to speak with the male. The male said he was overcharged and wanted his money back immediately. The complainant said as the assistant manager attempted to explain the process, the male continued to be irate and cause a disturbance. The male said he “was going to get his boys and return to shoot up the place.” The complainant called law enforcement and let the male know, who said “he didn’t care about the police.” He got into a dark blue Dodge Journey and left the scene. Using the license tag number and video surveillance footage, police were able to get an arrest warrant for the subject for assault in the third degree (communicating threats).

June 20
–Deputies were dispatched to Fire Department Road in Wallace at 8:03 p.m. about an argument between a grandmother and grandson. The grandmother said the 18-year-old grandson was disrespectful and said he “was going to whip her behind”. She said he let the air out of her tires through the valve stem. Before deputies arriving, the grandson ran out the back door. Later, the grandson was found lying in his bed. Traver Marquel Foster, 18, was arrested for threats.
June 23
–Deputies were traveling down Hwy 38 South in Blenheim at 12:44 p.m. when a red Ford vehicle was passed with heavy damage on the side of the road. The license tag was run on the vehicle, which was reported stolen from Kannapolis, N.C. Another deputy was notified of a white male carrying a suitcase standing at the Sprint gas station asking people for a ride back to North Carolina. Deputies spoke with him, and he stated that his friends had kicked him out of the vehicle. He told them he was Alexander Elijah Adams, 18, of Kannapolis. He was detained by deputies and transported to MCSO to be interviewed. Contact was made with the Kannapolis Police Department with information about Adams driving the red Ford and being at the beach with it. Adams was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle. He was also charged by the South Carolina Highway Patrol for traffic violations and leaving the scene of the accident. A hold was placed on him for the Kannapolis Police Department.
June 25
–Deputies were dispatched to Marshall Street in the Bennettsville area of the county at 12:05 a.m. about a man and woman fighting. The man, Kenneth Earl McLaurin, 54, said he had called Sarah Lorraine Watson, 49, over because she owed him some money and a cell phone. When Watson arrived, she refused to give him the items. The two got into a heated argument, she slapped him on the chest and began hitting him again. McLaurin said he grabbed her by the neck and pushed her away. Watson said he called her over to speak and started yelling about wanting his money and the cell phone. She said they exchanged words, he got upset and grabbed her by the neck. Watson said this was when she began slapping and hitting him on the chest. Deputies arrested both McLaurin and Watson for simple assault.
