BENNETTSVILLE — Members of the Historical Sawmill Missionary Baptist Church held their annual walk-a-thon and bike-a-thon Saturday, June 7 as the opening for the church’s Youth Day celebration.
Walkers and bikers began in the Knollwood Acres community with a goal set to walk or ride five miles to the church. Several walkers participated with each setting their own mileage goals. Two walkers reached a distance of three miles. Two bikers arrived at the church after a five mile ride on their moped and four-wheeler.
Upon arrival at the church, participants were welcomed with plenty of food and drinks. Members and guests enjoyed a day of fellowship and games of bingo.
During the youth day program, the following individuals were recognized for their participation in the following areas: Mr. Ronnie Moore – Seasoned Walker, and Hiltra Watson -Youngest Adult Walker, McKenzie Douglas – youngest biker and Mr. Luther Watson – seasoned biker.
Special recognition was given to the cooks Mr. Donald Calhoun and Mr. Barry Malloy and members who prepared food and gave support to the event.
Sawmill members would like to express appreciation to members of the Marlboro County Sheriff Department for ensuring safety throughout the event. This event is sponsored annually in memory of Mrs. Nellie Dease Williams, a past devoted member and youth advisor. The event was chaired by Ms. Annie Bell Dease, Mrs. Mattie D. Bostic, and Mrs. Linda Calhoun. Pastor is James J. Anderson
