Board places Tillar on administrative leave
A majority of the Marlboro County Board of Education voted this week to place the school district’s superintendent, Dr. Helena Tillar, on administrative leave, with full pay and benefits, effective immediately. 
Along with that, the same majority voted to seek a declaratory judgment from the South Carolina Circuit Court about the length of Tillar’s contract and the legality of an amendment that was made in 2014 that a “super majority” - six votes rather than five - would be required to terminate her contract.

Bennettsville Intermediate School was the site of a special event on Thursday, July 20: an “Authors’ Tea,” at which a group of young writers showcased their talents and the books they wrote themselves during a six-week summer reading camp.
The camp was for third graders from throughout the Marlboro County School District.

A cleaning crew is at Bennettsville Intermediate School (BIS) this week, following through on a recommendation made by a scientist and mold expert that the facility needs to be thoroughly cleaned before the new school year begins in August.
Ron Sharpe is a senior scientist employed by GEL Engineering, LLC of Charleston. He has more than 30 years of experience in the field of environmental safety and is considered an expert in indoor air quality, which includes mold.

Arrest made after robbery in parking lot

A Marlboro County man was arrested this week after allegedly robbing another man at gunpoint in the Walmart parking lot.
It happened around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 19, near Walmart’s garden center entrance, according to a Bennettsville Police Department incident report.
