Two charged with armed robbery in Bennettsville
Downtown Bennettsville was the scene of a violent incident this week which led to the arrests of two men on multiple charges.
It happened around 9:08 a.m. Tuesday, August 29, at the corner of Main and Marlboro streets, outside the Local Finance office.
The victim, an employee, was heading to the office with two money bags when she said a man approached her with a gun and slammed her to the ground. He forcefully took the money bags and fled.
Officers with the Bennettsville Police Department responded quickly to the scene and determined the area to which the suspect fled. They established a perimeter off Robeson Street and began searching property, with assistance from the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office.
They were able to locate him hiding under a home on Robeson Street, and he was taken into custody without incident. The stolen money was located, along with other evidence linking him to the crime.
That suspect is Javonda Morris of Bennettsville. He was charged with armed robbery, second degree assault, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and pointing and presenting a firearm.
As the investigation continued on Tuesday, police determined that another man had also been involved and had driven with Morris to the scene. Roy Rodriquez Bethea White of Bennettsville was charged with armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery.
Both men are being held at the Marlboro County Detention Center awaiting bond hearings.
The victim in this incident received medical treatment but was not seriously injured, said Bennettsville Police Department Lt. Larry Turner.
He also commended the citizens who came forward to provide crucial information leading to the arrest of Morris.
