Riding the rails
Marlboro County Economic Development Partnership offered local industry, business and civic leaders the opportunity to ride on the Marlboro County-owned railroad last Thursday. Several tours showed how the Pee Dee River Railroad serves Mohawk’s Oak River Site, Hanson Aggregates, and Domtar’s Marlboro Mill. At Domtar, folks on the morning rides got a bus tour of the facility and lunch was provided. The River Falls club car from Greenville was attached to a recently repainted Pee Dee River Railroad engine for the trips through the county. Garland Horton, of Aberdeen and Rockfish Railroad which is the operator of the local railroad, spoke to the groups about the railroad, its history and operation. Marlboro County administrator and economic developer Ron Munnerlyn discussed the importance of the railroad and its potential to serve even more industrial customers.
