A Marlboro County man was arrested this week after allegedly robbing another man at gunpoint in the Walmart parking lot.
It happened around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 19, near Walmart’s garden center entrance, according to a Bennettsville Police Department incident report.
As a result, Malek Rashawn Adams, 21, was arrested and charged with robbery and several drug violations. Adams’ address is listed on the incident report as 4150 Sherrill Road, Wallace, but the text of the report indicates he had been staying at Marlboro Court Apartments in Bennettsville.
The victim, a 30-year-old man from Rockingham, NC, told police the suspect approached him in the parking lot of Walmart and asked him for $5. When he said he didn’t have any money, the suspect pointed a gun at him and directed him to empty his pockets, taking his cell phone. He then said, “You can get your phone back when I get my money.”
The victim said the suspect left in a black Mazda with red paper tags. He chased the suspect in his vehicle into the neighborhood across the road from the shopping center but gave up the chase because of children playing in the street.
He gave police a description of the suspect. Adams was located at Marlboro Court Apartments and taken into custody. During a search of the Mazda, police found a handgun with a loaded clip inside.
A search of the apartment where Adams was staying yielded the victim’s stolen cell phone along with a sawed-off shotgun, a marijuana blunt and a scale.
