Marlboro County to start fall practice Friday
The new school year is still a few weeks away but preparations for the 2015 football season will start getting serious this Friday.
"We have had a productive summer. The guys showed a good deal of improvement during passing league contests and conditioning workouts. Now, it is time to put it all together," said Dean Boyd, who will be starting his 18th season as the Bulldogs' head coach.
"We have a lot of holes to fill (from last year's starting unit) but that is the case almost every year. Some young men will have to step up and lead. We start finding out who that is on Friday afternoon," said Boyd.
The Bulldogs will hit the practice field for their first workout at 6 p.m. They will practice again on Saturday morning, then practice at 6 p.m. on weekday afternoons.
The first full-contact practice will be on Wednesday.
Next Friday, August 7, the team will get their first opportunity to take on an opponent, scrimmaging at West Florence High School.
The second week of practice is filled with scrimmages. The Bulldogs will host Wilson High School on Tuesday, August 11. They will participate in a jamboree at Northern Guilford High School in Greensboro, NC the following day.
On Friday, the Bulldogs will host the Dennis Miller Jamboree of Champions. They will take on Keenan High School of Columbia in the nightcap of the jamboree.
After having several days to work on correcting mistakes, the team will host Northern Guilford in the final preseason scrimmage on Thursday, August 20.
The team will then open the regular season on Saturday, August 29 in the Derrick Law Firm Kickoff Classic. This year the Bulldogs will face North Brunswick High School of Leland, NC (just west of Wilmington).
Last year, Marlboro battled high-powered Richmond County in the Kickoff Classic.
"Playing in the Kickoff Classic has allowed us to start the season a week later than we had prior to last season. We don't get a bye-week during the season but do get an extra week of preparation," said Boyd.
"This will be another challenging opponent, so we will have to make the most of our time to get ready to play," said Boyd.
Jamboree of Champions
The Dennis Miller Jamboree of Champions will kickoff at 5 p.m. on August 14 with Darlington taking on Central of Pageland. At 6 p.m., Manning will face Cheraw. Chesterfield will play Hartsville in the 7 p.m. contest.
Defending Class AA state champ Dillon will face Lamar at 8 p.m.
The Bulldogs and Keenan Raiders will close out the action.
Tickets for the Dennis Miller Jamboree of Champions will be available at the MCHS field house for $5. All proceeds from local sales, prior to gameday, will benefit the MCHS booster club.
Tickets at the gate will be $7 and will be split between the ten teams.
Watching the entire event is a good preview of Marlboro County's season, as five of the other nine participating schools are on the Bulldogs' schedule.
