A Marlboro County Detention Center correctional officer was terminated and arrested after having an inappropriate relationship with an inmate.
According to Lt. Trevor Murphy, the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office arrested Courtney Michelle Freeman following an investigation at the Marlboro County Detention Center.
Murphy said the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office received information that a correctional officer at the detention center was having an inappropriate relationship with an inmate.
As a result of this investigation, the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office arrested Freeman, 31, of McColl. Freeman started working as a Corrections Officer at the detention Center on April 4 of this year.
Murphy said the investigation showed that shortly after beginning work at the detention center, Freeman became romantically involved with an inmate who is being detained on a murder charge.
The investigation went on to show that on at least two separate occasions, Freeman and the inmate were intimately involved.
Murphy said the Sheriff’s Office also learned that on one occasion, Freeman provided another inmate with contraband not approved by the detention center.
As a result, Freeman has been charged with first degree sexual misconduct with an inmate; second degree sexual misconduct with an inmate; misconduct in office; and furnishing contraband.
Freeman was terminated by the Detention Center and arrested on the above charges. She will receive a bond hearing at the Marlboro County Magistrate Office.
