Arauco North America has announced that it will permanently close the medium density fiberboard (MDF) plant in Marlboro County, effective May 18.
The closure was first reported by the wood products industry news website Woodworking Network.
According to the report, the plant is currently not in production due to market conditions caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
The plant is located next to Domtar Paper, on Willamette Road.  Arauco also operates a particleboard plant in Marlboro County, across Willamette Road from Domtar and the MDF plants.

Local volunteers work to make masks

People around the county, state, and nation are pulling out sewing machines to solve a problem during the COVID-19 pandemic — the need for masks.
Alisha McRae of Clio wanted to do something to help her sister, who works in Philadelphia.
“I really wanted her to have some kind of protection,” she said.
So McRae started sewing. She also had others asking her to make them.
In the past two weeks, she has made about 80 masks and donated over 20 to essential workers and the elderly.
“This is definitely one way to give back to the community and that’s why I’m donating two masks for every five sold,” McRae said.
Sewing is something she has always loved to do. While in college, she  sewed handbags.
Now she makes custom dresses at Dreams By Danielle Boutique.
