The Marlboro County School District will celebrate its new football field with a Marlboro County High School Sports Complex Ribbon cutting on Friday evening.
Superintendent Dr. Gregory McCord presented the board of education members at their meeting Tuesday with small replicas of the new field.
The replicas were made by Jesse Miles Jr. and students in the Building and Construction program at MCHS.
McCord said the field looks great.
“This is an investment in our young people and this community,” he said. “The field will be used for more than football. It will be used for band, JROTC, soccer, lacrosse, rugby, and community-held events.”
The community event is at 7:30 p.m. Friday at McAlpine Stadium. There will be a field show by the Mighty Marching Bulldogs. It will be a chance to meet the football team players and coaches along with other Fall Sports teams.
There will be a 20-year reunion for the 2001 football state champions. Also, there will be food trucks, bouncy houses, and COVID-19 vaccinations for those ages 12 and older.
Board members approved the almost $1 million state-of-the-art turf field in March.
McCord said he was there this week to watch the football team practice on the field for the first time.
“The excitement and the look in their eyes and gratitude they showed are all that I need to know that we did the right thing,” he said. “We are doing what we do for kids.”
In addition to celebrating the new field, officials will also show off the new track.
While McCord added he could not guarantee any wins for sports teams on the new field, it can’t but help.
“I can guarantee that we have the best facility for our students to be successful,” he said. “We want this to be the hub of the community. We have something special here.”
