Bulldogs scrimmage Socastee, travel to Cheraw Saturday

With the regular season just over a week away, the Marlboro County High football team is putting the finishing touches on their abbreviated preseason drills.
Last Saturday, the Bulldogs traveled to Socastee to play their only controlled scrimmage of the year.  Coach Bobby Collins was generally pleased with what he saw from his team.
"We got off the bus ready to play.  That was an issue last year, in that we were really slow to get started.  We started the scrimmage quicker," said Collins.
The Bulldog offense marched 70 yards with the first possession of the game, using a mixture of running and passing plays.  The drive was capped by a three-yard pass from quarterback Jesse Williams to Jaden Bostic.
Socastee's first possession was ended with an interception by Bulldog linebacker Jhamari Talley.

Bulldogs open nostalgia football season with thrilling 21-19 win over Hartsville

EDITOR'S NOTE: With the high school sports season delayed and facing possible cancellation,  it is looking more and more like that there may be a fall without Bulldog football.  That just can't happen.
So, the Herald-Advocate is going to create a season of "the Bulldogs' greatest hits."  Each week, we will remember a classic game from MCHS history against the opponent the 2020 Bulldogs would have faced.  If this year's team does get to take the field, we'll take up covering the current team.
The Bulldogs were originally scheduled to open the year at Hartsville tomorrow night.  This article is from the October 27, 2011 edition of the Herald-Advocate.

Bulldog schedule revised, practice to start August 17

With a more defined plan, the Marlboro County High football team will soon resume workouts for the upcoming season.  The Bulldogs will start conditioning on Monday, August 3 for the season that will now begin in mid-September.
"We stopped our workouts on the week of July 4th, just to get some clarity from the High School League about how the season would be held.  Now we have that and we'll be back to work soon," said head coach Bobby Collins.
Last week, the South Carolina High School League announced that football would be reduced to a seven-game regular season that will begin September 11.  The region games will be moved to the first five contests of the season, allowing some flexibility in getting those playoff-determining games in.
The playoffs are scheduled to begin October 30, with the state championships being played before Thanksgiving.

Griggs signs with Charleston Southern

Marlboro Academy graduating senior Josh Griggs signed a baseball scholarship with Charleston Southern University on Monday.  Griggs has been the Dragons’ ace pitcher for the last several seasons, as well as contributing at several infield positions and with his bat.  He will be joining a Buccaneer program that finished the pandemic-shortened season with a 7-12 record.
