If you are considering restoring or improving a building in Bennettsville and would like to save on your taxes at the same time, a program next week is for you.
Main Street Bennettsville, Marlboro County Historic Preservation Commission, City of Bennettsville Planning and Zoning Department, and Marlboro Chamber of Commerce will be co-hosting a historic preservation tax credits and incentives question and answer session. The event is free to the public and will be held at The Skye on Monday, October 26 at 5:30 p.m.
This information session is being offered to encourage local historic preservation and economic development. Dan Elswick, Senior Historic Architectural Consultant with the SC Department of Archives and History; Jenny Boulware, Main Street South Carolina manager; and Bennettsville native Chris Rogers, an attorney with Rogers, Lewis, Jackson, Mann & Quinn, LLC in Columbia who specializes in the use of historic tax credits, will all present valuable data and guidance.
The focus of the gathering will be to educate those present on how to best utilize federal, state, and local tax credits for historic rehabilitation on income-producing, commercial historic properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the downtown Bennettsville historic district and throughout Marlboro County. The tax credits can either be used individually or monetized with a third-party developer/investor.
“The benefits of using historic tax credits extend beyond the property owner or developer. The City of Bennettsville and all of Marlboro County can benefit from the preservation of a historic building for several reasons – the significant increase of the property’s market value, the economic stimulus of newly created jobs and businesses, and even the public perception benefits of transforming a blighted property into an asset, “ stated Elisabeth McNiel, program manager for Main Street Bennettsville.
Interested current and future property owners, developers, and policy makers as well as business owners and shopkeepers are encouraged to attend. For more information, call Main Street Bennettsville at 843-479-3941.
