A traffic stop led to a Bennettsville man facing several charges.

Detective Alford with the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division conducted a traffic stop on a pick-up truck in the Bennettsville area of Marlboro County on March 11 for multiple moving violations.

Alford noticed a strong smell of raw marijuana emitting from the vehicle and found the driver of the vehicle had a suspended license.

Sheriff officials said the driver, Jarick Jaleek Thomas, 27, of Bennettsville, was arrested for driving under suspension. A book bag with vacuum-sealed marijuana and a loaded handgun was found upon searching the vehicle.

Thomas was transported to the Marlboro County Detention Center. He was charged with driving under suspension, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, and possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a violent felony.

At the time of Thomas’ arrest, he was currently out on bond for attempted murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, trafficking methamphetamine, distribution of drugs near or in the proximity of a school and prisoners/furnishing contraband into a county or municipal prisons.

Thomas was given a $ 75,647 surety bond on his charges stemming from the traffic stop.
