A group of JROTC students from Marlboro County High School led by 1st Sgt Wayne Chapman and SFC Sherman Horne traveled to Charleston, SC on Wednesday, Feb. 25 to visit The Citadel.

Students were greeted by West Point graduate 1st Lt. Seye, an immigrant from Senegal who explained how he came to the United States and joined the US Army.

Lt. Seye and 1st Lt. Josh Simon guided the students around the parade grounds.

They allowed students to visit the quad within the barracks and explained how the “Knobs”, or first year students, lived on the 4th floor barracks, and how the school was divided into various organizations, those who are studying “military leadership”, compared to those who did not. Lt. Simon escorted the students into the campus library and chapel while he discussed Honor, Duty, and Respect — the code of The Citadel.

The chapel was lined with breathtaking stained-glass windows, portraits of military heroes, and former leaders of the school. These recruiters and admissions officers provided the students with an overall view of daily life for cadets of The Citadel.

During the tour, Lt. Simon also allowed the MCHS students to visit the static military displays that sit in honor around the parade ground at the center of the university. The students read from plaques in front of the displays of the M4 Sherman tank, a retired fighter jet (F-4 Phantom) and helicopter (AH-1 Cobra).

The JROTC students were treated to Citadel/Army handouts, Citadel sunglasses, bags and various swag provided by Lt. Col (Ret) Timothy Terese, Recruiting Operations Officer for The Citadel. Lt. Col. Terese again promoted the school and the opportunities to earn pay as National Guard/Reserve officers and/or Army enlistees as they attend the university. He explained the value of an education at The Citadel and the opportunities to earn scholarships as they attend.

In the evening, students had the amazing opportunity to witness a demonstration by the US Army Drill Team from 3D, US Inf. Reg. (Old Guard).

These soldiers gave a brief discussion of where they were from and how the team was organized. Their commander explained that each of the members were volunteers from a variety of Military Occupational Specialties (MOS) and from all over the country.

Their display of close order marching and weapons maneuvering was world class in its presentation and precision.
