The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Marlboro County is celebrating 25 years in 2019.
A kickoff for the event will be held at 6 p.m. Feb. 12 at the AJ Wright Memorial Building, 121 James S. McLeod Boulevard (Cheraw Street) in Bennettsville.
Relay Event Leader Ruby W. Bridges said everyone is invited to the kickoff to learn how to help the American Cancer Society save more lives from cancer.
Relay for Life began in Marlboro County in 1994.
The program will highlight how the community has benefited from funds raised and honor cancer survivors and caregivers.
The 2019 Relay for Life is from 6 p.m.-2 a.m. May 18 at Marlboro County High School.
Relay for Life is the world's largest fund raising event to fight cancer in every community, with four million participants in 27 countries in 2017.
Bridges said 250 people participated in the Relay for Life of Marlboro in 2018 and raised $34,118.
"This is our community's opportunity to help save lives from cancer by taking our message to more people and raising more dollars to fund the fight," Bridges said. "Together, our efforts can make a big difference."
Marlboro County Relay for Life is having a 25th-anniversary t-shirt design contest for a shirt for participants.
Bridges said the design should incorporate the words -- "Relay for Life of Marlboro County 25th anniversary, 1994-2019" somewhere on the shirt.
If a ribbon is used in the design, it should be purple or lavender as this color represents all cancer survivors.
Designs must be mailed to Bridges at email@example.com by 5 p.m. Feb. 11.
Voting will be at the kickoff event. The winning artist will have their signature added to the design and a press release.
