Remains identified as missing child

The search for missing eight-year-old Iyana Lowery came to its tragic conclusion this week when DNA determined that a body found Sunday morning in a remote area near McColl was hers.
Searchers found the body around 10 a.m. Sunday, May 14, in Gum Swamp Creek, off New Bridge Road. A tip led authorities to direct their attention to that area, which is between McColl and Clio.
Marlboro County Coroner Tim Brown used DNA records to identify the remains as Iyana. An autopsy performed Tuesday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston is providing additional information for the investigation, Sheriff Charles Lemon said.
The manner of death has been ruled a homicide, but the cause of death is not being released at this time due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.
